According to Scientific America, (Jan 1, 2016) article Dress for Success: How Clothes Influence Our Performance, "The old advice to dress for the job you want, not the job you have, may have roots in more than simply how others perceive you—many studies show that the clothes you wear can affect your mental and physical performance." I wear a lab coat and when they see me they immediately know that I am in some type of science field. They ask if I'm a scientist, a doctor, or a nurse. They understand that the coat represents the clothing of these professions and in our community, these professionals are too few.
With these lab coats, my students will be able to see themselves as scientists as they perform their ADI laboratory investigations. It is important that their perception is altered to reflect the type of engagement that I need out of them. If they are able to see themselves dressed as these professionals the benefits would be great! With this "dress for success" attire, they can perceive their ability to one day be in one of these professions.
