I have 8 Autistic students in my class. One student has very limited verbal skills. We are pairing a motivating item with sign language and the verbal prompt to increase her communication skills. For example, when we taught her "bubbles", we held up bubbles, modeled the sign for bubbles and verbally said, "bubbles". When the student imitated this, she was reinforced with the teacher blowing bubbles. Seven out of the eight students are a part of the Verbal Behavior Program in the classroom and take part in daily one on one intensive teaching and Manding (requesting) sessions daily. One student is included in the mainstream for most of the day, but comes to the Autistic Support Classroom for sensory breaks and additional support.
