I teach in a school that services the two largest military bases in the country. These bases house the Air Force, Navy Training Units, Special Forces, and Army. My classroom is made up of military students, special needs students, and students who are given one final chance to participate in public education due to behavioral issues. Our room becomes a safe haven and a place where each child's differences are embraced and accepted. This year, with budget cuts and cuts in staff, my classroom will be a home away from home to around 18 - 22 children. The responsibility to ensure that each child receives the education and learning experiences they deserve has become an even heavier load, having no money for supplies and increased teacher/student ratio. The impact and importance of their education, each individually, is something I strive to maintain at the highest level possible. We must create joy in learning.
