I teach 1st Grade all subjects. My school is located in an urban environment and, unfortunately, many student families are below the poverty line. Language barriers exist throughout all my classes as I have many students whom only speak Creole or Spanish. The simplest supplies are difficult for our parents. I asked the class to bring in notebooks and small items that most people have lying around in the house. Some children did bring in the supplies and others simply did not have the money to purchase them.
Writing is extremely important in life and is the key to having success in school. Falling behind or not reading on level leads to many problems later on in school, and can even lead some to drop out.
