My students are mostly minority, many live in poverty or struggling economic circumstances. On the whole, their reading levels are much lower than grade-level. I think that feeds their idea that they don't like reading. Frankly, so much reading they do is for tests and such, and it is kind of boring. I try to find books that they can relate to, books in which they can see some of themselves in the characters. It makes a world of difference for them.
