Back to the basics is all my students need. Every year we create interactive notebooks with notes, examples, drawings, and graphs. My students are given color handouts that they cut and glue into their notebooks. They use color pencils to highlight their steps on solving math problems. Their assignments are also copied onto color paper and white paper to allow students to differentiate between warm ups, classroom assignments, tests, and homework assignments. The students are only allowed to only use pencils in math to take their notes and complete their assignments. I have learned to pick my battles and fussing about pencils is just not worth it. So, I give them a new pencil when their pencil is broken or they just don't have one. This year we were not able to get brand new color pencils for my classroom. Therefore the students have been using some of the pencils from the previous years but they too are starting to brake easily. Back to the basics is simply giving my students the basic tools to be academically successful in our classroom.
