Several colleagues and I have been studying toxic stress and the effects on the developing brain. Our children are facing more stress than ever, but have not been given adequate coping skills to deal with it. Toxic stress over the course of time can cripple a child's ability to succeed not just in school, but in life.
By offering a mindfulness class, we are hoping to give students who are struggling tools to alleviate stress and anxiety throughout their lives. Deep breathing, guided meditation, and simple yoga practice will be a part of this mindfulness class, and yoga mats will be a must in order to achieve our goals with these students. Our classroom floors are extremely hard and cold, so high quality mats will be required for floor work. Because of limited storage space, the Stott Pilates mats are perfect because they have a built-in system for storage, eliminating the need for a bag or strap.
