Rocks have been a favorite of children of all ages and the supplies and technology I am requesting such as a rock tumbler, allow my students to discover some of the beauty and miracles that lye beneath the surface we stand on, while learning.
Over the last couple of years I have discovered when I teach about rock, crystals and geodes, the students forget that they hate school and are eager to learn. By allowing my students to bring their own treasures(Rocks) that they have found and exploring the differences in rocks made from the different soils and minerals, the students become explorers and become excited.
I have found that the few polished rocks I have in my classroom collection are great motivators and the students often ask to see them during free time. By exploring the treasures of the earth and tumbling those treasures into beautifully polished stones, the students feel accomplished, successful and are willing to work on the difficult behavioral problems they each face.
