Our day starts with breakfast in the classroom before school. My class is a mixed class with about three fourths of the students considered English language learners. Our school is a Title 1 school with 100% free or reduced breakfast and lunch. My students do not have access to computers away from school.
Despite the fact that they live in high poverty areas and often live in uncertain situations my students come to class happy and are eager to learn. While we eat we have discussions about what is going on in their life. We talk often about their goals for the future and what they need to do to achieve them. They want to continue their educations and have good jobs when they are adults.
I shared with them that I was in my forties when I decided I wanted to become a teacher. I explained how much work it was to get my teaching degree but that it was worth it. Several of them have said they want to become teachers like me.
