My students are so intelligent, but I have found that what holds them back in high school (and later college) is that their average reading level is not high enough to match the rigor they face. Based on most research, the more a person reads on their own, the more likely they are to be successful in secondary and post-secondary institutions.
We need more books to achieve this goal —books that will challenge them and inspire them to make a difference in their world. We are reforming our curriculum to foster this love of independent reading in our 9th grade and to produce real-life, real-world results for our students in college and careers. We want them to realize that one person can make a difference and prepare them to be that change.
