This pandemic has been a time of learning how to make music in alternative ways. Musicians all over the world have turned to various forms of layering and looping technology to extend their ability to create meaningful music during the pandemic. I want to give my students the opportunity to experience this powerful form of music-making in our music classroom. The looping stations I have chosen, one made for looping using hand controls and one made for looping in the form of a pedal, are highly rated while still being simple to use. Even my younger students will be able to use these to layer rhythmic, vocal, and instrumental music to express their own musical ideas. For my youngest students, I can use the station to add depth to their simple musical performances. These looping stations will give my students an exciting modern way to document their own musical ideas (MU:Cr2.3.2). Because our learning has been so interrupted, especially in the arts, this provides an alternative way for students who have not yet mastered written notation to be able to generate their own musical ideas (MU:Cr1.3.2).
Looping will free my students to express and validate their own emotions and ideas. Through expressing themselves, they can find the connection to others and release of creative energy that are so necessary during these difficult times. They can use music to process what has happened and is still happening to them as the pandemic continues. I look forward to many opportunities to discuss the meaning and effect of various musical structures as my students use looping to explore ways to convey intent and create their own musical compositions (MU:PR5.3.1, MU:Cr3.3.2).
