I teach at a school where over half the students are considered to be at the poverty line or lower. My students come from a diverse ethnic and socioeconomic background and I want to provide them with literature which reflects this. Each week, our students are required to read for 45 minutes of silent-sustained reading and it can be tough to encourage them when many of our books have protagonists to whom they cannot relate. My goal is to help these students find value and merit in learning in order for them to help themselves in their future aspirations.
