Our students are spending more time engaged with digital devices and less time connecting with the world around them. Teenagers are inundated with digital content in their personal lives, and since the pandemic, my own students have been required to complete more of their schoolwork through a digital device as well. I have noticed a steady decline in my students' grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills over the past several years, and since the pandemic, that decline has increased greatly.
One of the best ways I can help my students reconnect with their own learning and reengage with reading for fun while also increasing their vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing skills is to give them time to read independently in class and access to great books.
This project will add over 40 books to my classroom library. The titles represent diverse genres, authors, topics, and interests, and colored dot labels will allow me to sort my classroom library books in order to help my students find their next read. Additionally, the pouf ottomans and bean bag chair will finish my reading nook for students who need to read in a more relaxed setting.
The Oklahoma Academic Standards for Eleventh Grade ELA (2021), states that "students will select texts for specific purposes and read independently for extended periods of time." As a result of this project, my students will increase their vocabulary and improve their reading and grammar skills while also meeting this important standard.
