As we are learning and growing in our classroom, we have found that the more we can promote independent learning the more we can help students succeed in developing life independence. In order to do this we have found the need for a system or learning center that students can do independently once modeled and trained how to do. Often times students with severe disabilities become dependent on the adults they interact with most in their lives to help them with every day tasks that get them through their day.
By implementing a task box system with activities that students can navigate independently with a picture schedule, we will teach students to move through their day with less reliance on adults and empower them for a more independent future.
The materials being requested serve many purposes from the creating of the task box activities that will be switched and rotated often, to the containers that will hold the activities and baskets to show completion of their learning tasks. The plastic cutting boards are a SPED teacher's best friend as they will serve as a mounting board for their expected tasks and is almost nearly indestructible.
With many man hours, the task boxes will be completed through copying, laminating, cutting, and velcroing. Once completed they will be placed in the photo boxes allowing for years of use and student learning.
