My students read with limited access to brand new novels. Similar copies so students can engage in authentic, meaningful discussions in genre and levels are restricted. Frankly, the selections do not meet my learners' range of vast needs.
Books should reflect various perspectives, expanding choices for a range of reading levels and interests. Many of my current novels have male protagonists, lacking female role models and opportunities for conversations about cultural differences.
The books selected for this project will provide my rural students with role models and some cultural themes to promote tolerance within my guided reading groups. Students will be able to choose from books at their independent reading level to read and discuss with their classmates.
