My students are Head start students! They are 4 and 5 year old students from Michigan. To be in our program, families must qualify by their income being at or below the poverty line. But our qualifications are not truly who we are. We are students, we are learners, We are collage bound ( thanks to the promise of our city). My students are special because we are working on celebrating who we are, no matter who that is.
We are learning to be kind and compassionate , to be empathetic and to learn about our world and the world that is outside of our walls. We are learning about the world outside of our walls through books, music, and language. We are even learning sign language as a second language so that we are better able to communicate with staff in our building who are deaf. In our classroom, we celebrate who we are as well as who other people are. We recognize our differences and celebrate our similarities.
