I have 7 freshman boys in my Writing class this year. Their abilities range from struggling to write basic words just so they can express their thoughts to writing in complete sentences but struggling with putting anything more down on paper. They are energetic and inquisitive but often get down on themselves, because not only is writing hard, but it's even more of a struggle when their learning disability is in language arts. Reading and writing go hand-in-hand, and when you are far below the high school standard, it is hard to keep up and stay positive. These kids come from all over the city of Chicago and don't always see the opportunities in front of them. Our school is on the north side of the city but through a lottery accepts students from all over Chicago. This provides us rich culture and diversity to celebrate but also lends us to work even harder to get our students where they need and want to be.
About my class
