My students are in grades 6-8 in an inner city school plagued with poverty. In fact, 100% of students in our K-8 school qualify for free and reduced lunch. In addition, our school has the highest English Language Learner population in the state and many students receive special education services.
This year, we began the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program in the middle school. AVID is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other post secondary opportunities.
Despite the obstacles that they face in their lives, my students come to school determined to succeed. They are actively engaged in their learning and practice strategies to help enhance their writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading skills. All of the students in my AVID elective class have the desire to pursue their dreams as first generation college students.
