My students range in age from 3 years to 8 years old. They are also deaf and/or hard of hearing. They are an active bunch that needs visuals and hands-on experiences to fully grasp concepts and understand language. Many students come to me at age 3, and that is when they start learning American Sign Language (ASL). For this reason, many students in my class have language delays that make communication with others difficult.
One of the reasons I love teaching these kids is because I will normally have them for a minimum of 5 years. This makes my classroom feel like one big family! It also allows me to see their growth and progress throughout the years and celebrate the goals they meet.
The school we are in is a title 1, high poverty school and thus we don’t have funding for the supplies needed to enhance and support the lessons for these kids. The kids that go to this school are very understanding and inclusive of my students. It’s a wonderful community to be in!
