Book clubs support reading comprehension, enabling students to see more in a text than they would have on their own. Students are grouped with peers who are at a similar independent level and are provided with a copy of the same book. The teams plan out the chapters they will be responsible for each day, read independently, and meet together for book club conversations. Currently, our class does not have multiple copies of texts at various levels to support this model of instruction.
In addition to enabling students to read for the recommended time proven to promote academic growth, social skills are developed as teams communicate respectfully with their peers. Moreover, each club is encouraged to elaborate on their ideas and support their claims with evidence from the text.
