My 26 second grade students are from a very impoverished, high need area of town. There is not a lot of structure or support from families and we know that we provide that sanctuary for many students. This school provides 100% free and reduced lunches for our families. Teachers have very high expectations of all students, however, the reality is that over half of my students are far below grade level in reading. Unfortunately, homework is rarely done because the adults aren't requiring it or supporting it at home.
