My students are 9–12 graders in a suburban school. We have diverse interests and course offerings throughout campus that make us unique from the rest of our district. In an effort to enable the diverse student population an opportunity to be musical in their own way, we are creating a new class that does not require previous school music courses. In addition, by empowering students through art and the music making process, students can bridge the unfortunate gap between STEM and STEAM, where the arts are a focal point of the new educational trend. This connection is invaluable to students as the music making is fundamental to our humanity (at the individual, community, society, and global levels). Using 21st-century materials and skills with the core need to express oneself, students become more aware of their own potential.
