Video modeling is an evidenced based practice that has proven to be especially effective in teaching skills to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Those students with autism are more likely to learn from a video of a skill or interaction that is being performed by another person. For example if the student needs to learn the routine of coming in and hanging up their coat, they are more likely to learn this by repeatedly watching that skill performed by someone else on video. Those in the classroom that do not have autism can also benefit by visually having their actions reinforced and by building the vocabulary and communication skills that are needed in the video creating process. Right now with the one iPad that we have it has proven impossible to effectively capture and create the teaching of all skills throughout the day. This really limits the exposure that some of our students are receiving to their education.
Through video modeling, I would love to see each student communicating at their most optimal level. I believe that these two iPads would be one step in the right direct for our students. My long term goal would be to have a total of six iPads between the two classes.
