Hello. I am a fourth grade teacher at an inner city school in the northeast. I have come to the realization that children can not learn until they are convinced they are worth it and that the environment they are in is a safe one. Once that safe environment is established, learning can begin. Quite often I close my eyes and have my students read their writing to me. We then discuss whether or not I was able to get a mental picture in my brain of the scene/situation the were describing. This is what good writers are able to do. Developing writing like this is very difficult for forth graders. An exciting technique that I like to use is allowing students to create watercolor paintings and write to their own artwork. this is a very exciting way to teach. It is an expensive undertaking. Giving students opportunities to read rich writing and see rich illustrations requires an extensive library
