As a class, the students are below level. They need more opportunities to experience books that have an example of rhyme and keep them engaged. These books will be read introducing the concept of the lesson each week and rhyming words are a bonus. Some standards that have to be mastered are identifying character, setting, plot, cause and effect, sequence, identifying beginning sounds, identifying ending sounds, etc. The Reading goal is to get the students to read basic or cvc (consonant vowel consonant) words at this grade level. Dr. Seuss books are the perfect types of books that can help enhance their learning.
