My school is located in South Los Angeles. The demographics are approximately 70% Latino, 30% African American, and 100% qualify for Title I funding. Our transiency rate is about 30%, so there are always students coming and going. Even with these obstacles, we believe our students have the ability to be just as successful as their peers in other areas. Because of this, our school is one of the highest performing schools in our area.
My students come to school everyday and give me the best they can. Many of them have a lot of responsibilities outside of school like watching younger siblings, and helping run a household. Going to the library might not be something they can do, so I would like to provide them quality literature to read in class. The students all bring their own interests and strengths, some excel in math, others writing, etc. The one thing they all do enjoy is a good story.
