One way to inspire children to write is by creating a class memory book. Throughout the school year, I take photos of students doing activities, such as art, science, math games, physical education, reading, writing, dance, field trips, parties, etc. The students’ eyes light up with excitement when I show them the photos! Much talking about the photos comes with this excitement. Once this process of looking and talking occurs, each student is asked to write about the photo. Of course, an adult volunteer or I will be helping most of these young students write down their thoughts as they talk about the photos. Photos bring back precious memories giving each student a voice … something to talk and write about. Each student is successful in their writing because photos are an inspirational force! Each student’s memory book is personalized. While some pages (i.e. drawn self portraits, all about me pages) are duplicated for the entire class, other pages (i.e. favorite field trip photo and story, first day of school photos) are unique to each student’s yearbook. At the end of the school year, all the mass produced and unique pages are bound together into a beautiful yearbook. With your support and generosity, students will build their love and skill of writing, and families will have a special memory book to treasure and enjoy for years to come. I want these students' first year in school to be a memorable and enjoyable one!
