Even though many of their reading abilities are well below grade level, what's not below grade level is their determination and desire to improve. At the beginning of the year when I asked my students about books they have read before, many of my kids told me they "hated reading" and left it at that. Of course, I had heard that many times before. With a laugh and a devious smile I would always respond, "Some day you will hate it less. Maybe even *love* (shocked face) it!" Well, after reading "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers as a class, they soon found out that there are books they will absolutely LOVE. From then on, their insatiable appetite for reading has only increased. From asking me every. single. day. --"Ms. Lehman when are you gonna get more books for us," to making direct requests for "more Bone books," or "more Bluford High books," their love for reading has been truly inspiring.
