My students need a better environment to learn in. I teach blended learning, or small group instruction, during most of the day and my students need a place where they are comfortable learning. These kids are in school for 7 hours a day sitting in the same hard chair every single day. I certainly don't work best sitting in the same seat all day so I can not expect that form my students. I am asking for a Round Carpet, a set of Pillows and some Letter Size Clipboards in order to provide flexible seating/working options to my students.
I would like to start my flexible seating with a rug for students to lay on or sit on and some pillows to prop up against walls of their choice. The rug will be a game changer in my classroom. With the rug I can teach lessons up close and personal with my students. I can even break it down into two groups, an independent group and my group lesson. Being able to teach students in smaller groups always yields results of better understanding. I teach upper elementary and they don't give us access to rugs in the classroom. I want to change that idea that students should be sitting at a desk all day. Students having the opportunity to get up from their seat and work in an area that is comfortable for them will allow them to think less about their environment and focus more on their work. If they are choosing where they sit they wont be getting up and moving around as often.
This is the 21st century. As we are changing our teaching methods we should also be changing our teaching environment. Students have been sitting at desks since schooling started. Lets more towards an environment conducive these students learning needs.
