My school's adopted writing curriculum was not student and teacher friendly. Students were often confused and could not meet expectations. Knowing my students, I made the decision to change the writing curriculum that was simplified, better aligned with the state standards, and actually taught the skills the students really needed.
1st-graders need to be read to daily to help improve reading skills. With the new writing curriculum, there are suggested read-aloud books that help teach a specific writing strategy or concept. These books will help me teach those specific skills that will improve student's writing. Having a permanent teacher set of the read-aloud books will ensure that I will have the suggested book available at all times. I would no longer need to rely on the public library and fear that the books won't be available.
