My students are 5 year olds who sometimes have no experience whatsoever of a school day. Of a class or 24 Kindergarten students, I am lucky to have at least half who have attended preschool. Some of these students are migrants, which means they will leave when the harvesting season ends and hopefully return later in the year. My students are diverse and come in with a variety of home languages: Spanish, Punjabi, Tagalog, Ilocano, English, etc. They and I learn to communicate and we learn from each other. My students all have one thing in common regardless of their differences, and that is they are all eager to come to school and learn! It is a challenge to teach them language as well as academics but I am up to that challenge. Our teachers and school environment also takes on that challenge. I, and the rest of our staff, know that communication with parents is the key to helping our students succeed. Our school and classrooms are welcoming to any who would like to come and visit.
