Hands down, my favorite thing about my class is that they love learning through literature! My students have varying interests and possess a passion for exploring the topics that intrigue them the most. It is powerful to hear them discuss a book. When a class can have productive discussion about a story, when they listen and explore each other's point of view, they grow as learners. It is extremely beneficial to pull books from our library to supplement our curriculum and the skills we are working on. Students are more engaged when the literature interests them.
Our classroom library is very limited; these books will allow us to meet our state standards and reach individual goals as well as continue having constructive discussions. They will become a useful tool to me in teaching standards such as character traits, point of view, theme, main idea, and making inferences. These books will find a home in our classroom library so the students can read to their interests, better their comprehension, and build vocabulary.
