Staffing shortages abound in schools all over our country due to effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because we are frequently short staffed, our carpet doesn't always get vacuumed. In addition, any assignment that involves cutting paper, sprinkling glitter, or enjoying a snack results in a very messy carpet. Without frequent vacuuming, our room looks and feels pretty gross in just a few days!
A vacuum would allow me to keep our learning environment clean and orderly. In first grade, at least 25% of my teaching time is "carpet time". The students will often sit together on the carpet to read with their peers, or hear a story. We may use math manipulatives together while sitting on the rug. They occasionally even have playtime on the carpet. Unfortunately, we have frequently had to forgo carpet time because the rug was too dirty to sit on. My students really love carpet time, and it would be so helpful if I could vacuum everyday to ensure that their learning space is clean and tidy.
Our classroom is our home-away-from home. Many students spend more waking hours in our class, than they do at their own house. My students deserve a space that is clean and clutter free. A tidy room leads to a greater sense of calm, and that in turn lends itself to a greater ability to focus for the kids (and me too!). A vacuum will allow me to provide such a space for my wonderful first-graders.
