Our school is in the heart of an inner city neighborhood. Over 95% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. 94% are Hispanic and 72% of our families do NOT claim English as their primary language. The average yearly income in our area is $20,000 less than the state average. The conditions our students face outside of school are not easy. Parents are struggling to give them a safe place to sleep, food, and clothes. Most live in apartment complexes with little green space for them to play after school or in the summer. Still our students come to school with a smile. They are excited to learn. They ask questions. They come up with the craziest ideas. They dream. And, they love to read. In fact, the favorite books in the library are very revealing as to their nature. For grades K-3 the Lego books, new to our library this year, are the most checked out.
