I currently teach two sections of 5th grade English Language Arts with a total of 57 students. My students have a wide range of reading abilities. While a majority of students are reading at grade level, about 20% of my students are reading in the 1st - 3rd grade range.
It can be difficult for my stdents to find success in reading when there are only a handful of books that are both reading level appropriate and engaging for them. While all of my students will benefit from having new books added to our library, this group of students will especially benefit. They will be able to read a wider range of books and feel proud knowing that they can read them on their own successfully.
We require our students to read 5 books each trimester. Many students go above and beyond this requirement. I can only imagine the continued successes they will have with this task when provided with brand new books for our classroom library.
