My students are from a rural community in Maine. We attend a public school where 63% of students are economically disadvantaged. I am a first grade teacher and I often wonder how we expect 6 and 7 year olds to sit for such long periods of time with paper and pencil tasks. I have found that in order to get students involved and excited about learning, we need to give them hands-on, meaningful tasks. STEM tasks give students the opportunity to become the drivers in their own learning as they hypothesize, experiment and analyze results in meaningful and integrated scientific investigations.
