I have partnered with the occupational therapist and my first grade colleague to bring this handwriting program to both first grade classes at our school. This project will help us teach students proper pencil grip, letter formation, letter sizing and letter placement for all capital and lowercase letters. These tools will allow our students to use wooden blocks to build letters, color in small spaces to develop their hand strength and sing/dance along to songs to improve their spatial awareness.
Handwriting Without Tears is an evidenced-based handwriting curriculum that provides step by step instruction to help students learn letter formation without frustration.
The small chalk boards would be amazing because I would write out the letter in chalk and then my students can trace the letter with a sponge, dry the letter with a towel and then try to write it in chalk themselves! This is the wet-dry-try method that would help many of my students learn their capital letters! If my students could enter second grade with confidence in their writing ability they would be able to focus on the content of writing and not the mechanics.
