Our class size is usually ten but this year there are currently eleven children, nine boys and two girls, ages three to five in my classroom. Our program runs five hours on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The children attend school for three hours on Thursdays. We are in a low socio- economic part of the city. Many children come from homes where English is not the primary language. This is their first time in a school setting and being away from mom.
There are four classes for autistic children located on this campus. A TK/K class, two Pre-K classes and an Inclusion Program. We are very fortunate that the students want to volunteer during their recess to work with our children. Given the increasing evidence of the importance of early intervention to help maximize ultimate outcomes in children with autism, this material provided by this project will help foster independence, curiosity and imagination.
