My students are smart 4th and 5th grades students that come from a low socio-economically challenged community in Chicago. Many of them come to school with the zest to learn but lack a lot of the home nurturing that should accompany learning to foster a well rounded individual. Many of my students are being raised by an older grandparent or a sibling. Very few of them have a parent in the home for various reasons. But they come to school every day thirsting for knowledge and I can't wait to see them.
Our school is like a family. Students know that if they are not getting some of the basic essentials at home, we will provide as much support as we can at school. Our school prides its self on rigor in the classroom for the production of College Bound individuals. We just had a 5th grade student win 1st place in the DuSable Museum Black History Essay contest. So our students can achieve if they are equipped with the necessary tools to work in class and independently after school.
