I teach in a rural community. My school is funded by Title 1 and has a slightly high poverty level. My students are greatly motivated by extrinsic rewards. I have found that having a class store available for many years have helped in motivating. All students are given a debit card and either earn or lose money. I have found over the years that having candy for rewards and available for my students to purchase with their earned money from our class store works wonders. Some students have never had the opportunity to earn and spend money on their own. Having a class store, gives these students choice to spend their money and be rewarded based on grades, attitude, and behavior. I believe that rewarding students is a must in the teaching world.
