I am currently a Literacy Coach and Intervention Teacher to 1st - 5th grade students. In our urban, low socio-economic community, many of the students are being raised by aunts or grandparents, living with single mothers or mothers living with other relatives in order to provide support and assistance with their child. Our Title 1 school consists of 50% Latino American, 48% African American, 1% is Pacific Islanders and 1% Asian. Our school is in the process of transitioning to the Common Core State Standards. Therefore, teachers and students are becoming familiar with new curriculum in order to prepare them for college, a career and for life. As the Literacy Coach, my job is to prepare teachers to deliver Language Arts instruction that teaches students to read, analyze and think critically about complex text. As the Intervention teacher, I provide intense instruction to students who are working below grade level.
