My students are 7th, and mostly 8th graders. These students come from hardworking families, at times families who work so hard that they don't have time to monitor students' homework, drive them to school, or have the extra money for school supplies. Because so many of our students have a difficult home life, school is a place for them to feel safe and supported. As a math teacher, I do my best to create an environment where students want to learn and believe that they can attain a successful future with dedication and perseverance. I see students who start out the year not saying a word, beginning to work with their classmates and engage in conversations about math, and it's amazing to experience. What's lacking from our diverse, warm classroom is supplies. Our curriculum is amazing and gets students working together, but it requires materials that I cannot require my students to purchase.
