I teach literacy to approximately 65 students each day. We are working hard to get caught up in reading and writing to meet or exceed grade level standards. My students come from various backgrounds but have one thing in common: they need to become better readers and writers so they are successful in middle school, high school, and beyond.
We are the the only middle school in a rapidly-growing northern Colorado community, with enrollment of approximately 950 students in grades 6-8. I work with all three grades.
My students read 1-4 levels below their current grade level. Many students struggle to focus while they work on reading and other assignments, and one of the things I believe will help is an alternative to the traditional desk.
In the past few weeks of piloting, we have found that students perform noticeably better on assignments when they're sitting on a ball instead of at a desk, especially the more wiggly students (several of my students are diagnosed with ADHD)!
