The urban student's life can be full of distractions, from electronics to peers around them, it is a small wonder that they miss learning opportunities, or have trouble concentrating.
They need the time and skills to focus internally and on the task at hand. Doing art in a science class gives students the chance to tune in to themselves. In that quiet space, I think it's possible for students to truly notice, observe, think, ponder a question; all critical skills for doing science.
They enjoy the calming opportunity to add color to an assignment, add emphasis to notes, color code a graph, distinguish categories, and render their reality. Conversely, they also enjoy the lively camaraderie of communicating their results and ideas, in full color.
