All of the students in the school are considered to be of low socioeconomic status. The entire school is on a free lunch program. My school is supportive and values reading, but does not have all of the financial means to do so. There is a lack of parent support, thus, the parents do not value reading. I want to instill in my students that reading is an adventure and can lead you to greatness. They are very young readers, and read at a low level.
The students love to read, but struggle to accomplish this task. New books would benefit their interest in reading and teach them that reading can be fun. They enjoy books that relate to television, movies, animals, and tie in nonfiction. Teaching them to value books and read for pleasure would greatly help them learn that books are fun and keep their interest.
