The students participate in a highly structured classroom in an elementary school. The Autism Unit utilizes a small student/teacher ratio, visual supports and individual schedules to ensure daily success. Individuals with autism often have a limited repertoire of functional, spontaneous communication. Some of the students have speech, but it often is unintelligible or has limited functionality. Therefore, the student's wants and needs may not be met in an effective or timely manner. The IPads can provide a bridge from a mind of thoughts, feelings and needs that are held in silence, to a place where interaction, expression and learning are possible.
