Our school population consists of a lot of diverse children. Students are in need of a lot of background knowledge and exposure to books. About half of the students in my classroom have admitted that they don't get read to at home. Whenever I send them off to the library, my students' faces glow because they get to take a book home with them.
Even though I have some gently used books in my classroom, I don't have enough to keep them engaged with them throughout the year. By this time of the year, they are already asking me for different books because they are bored with my library. I don't like hearing this from my students, so I try to purchase books off of some points I earn through Scholastic, but the points are never enough for the amount of books I would like to have.
