My students are very sweet and come from a low income area. Despite their lack of money they do want to do well in school. Many of their parents work long hours as they work two jobs; leaving them little time to support their child at home. Our children take on a lot of responsibility for themselves; getting their homework done, proper sleep, proper nutrition etc. is a lot for a 3rd grader to tackle. Any support I can give them I do. This support is not just academically before or after school; but also emotionally.
My students love sharing with me and I make sure they have time to do so at lunch, outside at pick up or drop off. Most recently; I have one who sleeps a lot. We had a private conversation about his. Since I had already had discussions with his mother and there were no changes he and I came to resolution. He would go to bed earlier and see his grades go up; and get a piece of candy from me each day he did not sleep. He has stayed awake and improved every day !
