In Algebra 1, we use "middle space" often, to foster effective collaboration and sense making while students are working together in their groups. One whiteboard per group will help to emphasize that middle space and give students a versatile and interactive space to make sense of their learning.
Having one white board per group will be really helpful for students to show their work and organize their math manipulatives. We use a math manipulative called "Algebra Tiles." Algebra tiles are one of my favorite tools to use with students because they help turn conceptual ideas into physical representations. More specifically, They help students to make sense of polynomial addition and subtraction, multiplication, factoring, and much more! These small tiles can get a little chaotic without a specific surface for students to use them on, which is where the whiteboards will really come in handy. Students' Algebra tiles will stay on the whiteboards to keep students organized and tidy. These whiteboards will be the interactive surface where groups place and label their Algebra Tiles during class activities.
