For my students learning social skills by playing a game is extremely helpful. A game allows peers to provide feedback on the social setting. These skills need to be practiced over and over again, therefore a lesson needs to be creative and safe. While I cannot predict every situation a student will ever be in, providing them with these situations to work through with a trusted adult is extremely important.
The games give lessons variety since many materials are worksheets. Games provide a higher level of social skills because the student will share their views, thoughts, and process for decisions. Rubik cubes help students stay focused and fidget with something, and keeps the electronics out of their hands during instruction. Markers and colored pencils provide art materials that my classroom currently does not have. Art is an outlet that will be used to complete assignments individually.
